“A disciple is not greater than his teacher, nor a slave greater than his master. It is enough for the disciple to become like

listen to it and so deceive yourselves. For if someone merely listens to the message and does not live it out, he is like
someone who gazes at his own face in a mirror. For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets what
sort of person he was. But the one who peers into the perfect law of liberty and fixes his attention there, and does not
become a forgetful listener but one who lives it out – he will be blessed in what he does.
James 1:19-25

Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach. Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself
and those who listen to you.

Everyone who goes on ahead and does not remain in the teaching of Christ does not have God. The one who remains in this
teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into
your house and do not give him any greeting, because the person who gives him a greeting shares in his evil deeds.

Father in heaven. On that day, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out
demons and do many powerful deeds?’ Then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you. Go away from me, you lawbreakers!’

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the
flood came, and the winds beat against that house, but it did not collapse because it had been founded on rock. Everyone
who hears these words of mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the
flood came, and the winds beat against that house, and it collapsed; it was utterly destroyed!”
When Jesus finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed by his teaching, because he taught them like one who
had authority, not like their experts in the law.

Do not be carried away by all sorts of strange teachings. For it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not ritual
meals, which have never benefited those who participated in them. We have an altar that those who serve in the tabernacle
have no right to eat from. For the bodies of those animals whose blood the high priest brings into the sanctuary as an
offering for sin are burned outside the camp. Therefore, to sanctify the people by his own blood, Jesus also suffered
outside the camp. We must go out to him, then, outside the camp, bearing the abuse he experienced. For here we have no
lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.

with all your strength.’ The second is: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than
these.” The expert in the law said to him, “That is true, Teacher; you are right to say that he is one, and there is no one
else besides him. And to love him with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength and to love your
neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he had answered
thoughtfully, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Then no one dared any longer to question him.

I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and
his kingdom: Preach the message, be ready whether it is convenient or not, reprove, rebuke, exhort with complete patience
and instruction. For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own
desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things. And
they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths. You, however, be selfcontrolled
in all things, endure hardship, do an evangelist’s work, fulfill your ministry.
2 Timothy 4:1-5

Watch out for yourselves and for all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of
God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after I am gone fierce wolves will come in among you, not
sparing the flock. Even from among your own group men will arise, teaching perversions of the truth to draw the disciples
away after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning each one of you
with tears.
Acts 20:28-31

I, therefore, the prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live worthily of the calling with which you have been called, with all
humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit
in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you too were called to the one hope of your calling, one
Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Therefore it says, “When he
ascended on high he captured captives; he gave gifts to men.” Now what is the meaning of “he ascended,” except that
he also descended to the lower regions, namely, the earth? He, the very one who descended, is also the one who ascended
above all the heavens, in order to fill all things. It was he who gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as
evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, that is, to build up the body of
Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God – a mature person, attaining to the
measure of Christ’s full stature.
Ephesians 4:1-13

Now in those days, when the disciples were growing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Greek-speaking
Jews against the native Hebraic Jews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the
twelve called the whole group of the disciples together and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to wait on
tables. But carefully select from among you, brothers, seven men who are well-attested, full of the Spirit and of wisdom,
whom we may put in charge of this necessary task. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the
word.” The proposal pleased the entire group, so they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,
with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a Gentile convert to Judaism from Antioch. They stood
these men before the apostles, who prayed and placed their hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, the
number of disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly, and a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.
Acts 6:1-7

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a
guest. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he said. But Martha was distracted with
all the preparations she had to make, so she came up to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do
all the work alone? Tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about
many things, but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the best part; it will not be taken away from her.”

I tell you the solemn truth, the person who believes in me will perform the miraculous deeds that I am doing, and will
perform greater deeds than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the

toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let those of us who are “perfect” embrace this point of
view. If you think otherwise, God will reveal to you the error of your ways. 16 Nevertheless, let us live up to the
standard that we have already attained.

distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need. Every day they continued to gather together by common
consent in the temple courts, breaking bread from house to house, sharing their food with glad and humble hearts, praising
God and having the good will of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every day those who were being
saved.

own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So we

opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.
