Names of God

Genesis 17:1

When Abram was ninety- nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless

Elohim (Genesis 1:1; Numbers 23:19; Psalm 19:1)
Meaning: God
Significance: Refers to God’s power and might. He is the only supreme and true God.

Yahweh (Genesis 2:4; Exodus 6:2, 3)
Meaning: The Lord
Significance: The proper name of the divine person.

El Elyon (Genesis 14:17- 20; Numbers 24:16; Psalm 7:17; Isaiah 14:13, 14)
Meaning: God Most High
Significance: He is above all gods; nothing in life is more sacred.

El Roi (Genesis 16:13)
Meaning: God Who Sees
Significance: God oversees all creation and the affairs of people.

El Shaddai (Genesis 17:1; Psalm 91:1)
Meaning: God Almighty
Significance: God is all- powerful.

Yahweh Yireh (Genesis 22:13, 14)
Meaning: The Lord Will Provide
Significance: God will provide our real needs.

Yahweh Nissi (Exodus 17:15)
Meaning: The Lord Is My Banner
Significance: We should remember God for helping us.

Adonai (Genesis 18:27)
Meaning: Lord
Significance: God alone is the head over all.

Yahweh Elohe Yisrael (Judges 5:3; Psalm 59:5; Isaiah 17:6; Zephaniah 2:9)
Meaning: Lord God of Israel
Significance: He is the God of the nation.

Yahweh Shalom (Judges 6:24)
Meaning: The Lord Is Peace
Significance: God gives us peace so we need not fear.

Qedosh Yisrael (Isaiah 1:4)
Meaning: Holy One of Israel
Significance: God is morally perfect.

Yahweh Sabaoth (1 Samuel 1:3; Isaiah 6:1- 3)
Meaning: Lord Almighty or Lord of Hosts (Hosts refers to armies but also to all the heavenly powers.)
Significance: God is our savior and protector.

El Olam (Isaiah 40:28- 31)
Meaning: The Everlasting God
Significance: God is eternal. He will never die.

Yahweh Tsidkenu (Jeremiah 23:6; 33
Meaning: The Lord Our Righteousness
Significance: God is our standard for right behavior. He alone can make us righteous.

Yahweh Shammah (Ezekiel 48:35)
Meaning: The Lord Is There
Significance: God is always present with us.

Attiq Yomin (Daniel 7:9, 13)
Meaning: Ancient of Days
Significance: God is the ultimate authority. He will one day judge all nations
